Pixels For Prostate Cancer

This is a broad list of resources that come from many sources.  We have tried to organize them in a useful way.  The groupings below are somewhat arbitrary, so don't interpret them too narrowly.  Also, it is important to evaluate the information as best you can.  Try to evaluate the knowledgeability and possible biases of the source and take that into account.

This page is not done, but we did not want to wait until the lengthy process of fully organizing this page was complete.  Please let us know of any broken or otherwise bad links, and give us your feedback on resources we have missed.  Your suggestions are welcome!

Note: On this page, the links to outside resources open new windows, so to get back here, close the new window, rather than clicking the Back button.

Pathology

David Bostwick, M.D.
https://www.bostwicklaboratories.com/
The site is run by Dr David Bostwick M.D who was the expert pathologist from the Mayo clinic. The site provides basic medical information about prostate cancer. Not all options for treatment are represented.

It provides services like second opinion reading the slides, DNA Ploidy and other tests on the biopsy material:

Since the site was created by a pathologist this site has Digital atlas of pathological slides of prostate cancer:
http://www.bostwicklaboratories.com/digital/prostate/adenocarcinoma.html
Under medical information sections I found the Glossary to be very good.

Alternative Medicine

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
http://nccam.nih.gov/

A good site for Alternative and Complementary treatments. The main shortcoming is the fact that prostate cancer as a disease is very much underrepresented. There is a lot of information about other cancers.

A special office for Alternative Medicine was created in 1993 within the NIH.
The services provided are as following:
    1. Health information –
        a. Explaining Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
        b. Alerts and Advisories
        c. Treatment Information.
    2. Clinical trials

Rosenthal Center - Internet Resources on Cancer
http://www.rosenthal.hs.columbia.edu/About_us.html
The Rosenthal Center's broad goals are to contribute to the informed research and practice of complementary and alternative medicine and to foster the development of a more comprehensive and inclusive medical system. In the case of cancer, as with other medical problems, it is difficult to obtain advice, referrals or simple information outside of mainstream medicine. Increasingly, patients and care givers have to do much of the research for themselves.

Internet Mailing Lists

An Internet Mailing List is a way for a group of subscribers to communicate with each other using email.  When a subscriber posts a message on the List, it is sent to all subscribers by email, so everyone sees it.  When there are replies, everyone can see all the replies.

(Thanks go to Nancy Peress, whose Resource List posted on PPML was a valuable reference in preparing this list.)

Physicans' Advice

Coach to Player - C2P

This is the Mailing List of the Prostate Cancer Research and Education Foundation.  This is for the purpose of discussing the issues relating to an individual's case, and providing information on a course of action useful to the survivor and his loved ones.  Dr. Barken's advice is unbiased, and referrals to physicians in the patients home area are often made.

The emphasis is on philosophy and understanding, and provides tools for the management of the patient who has prostate cancer.  The philosophy includes
       o Patient Empowerment
o Minimum Intervention with Maximum Surveillance to insure Maximum Quality of Life.
o Implementing the art of combining medical science with physician's experience and patient values and preferences.

Physician to Patient (P2P)
The purpose of the P2P mailing list is to provide the prostate cancer  patient and loved ones with information from physicians about the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. This is a moderated list without the high volume normally associated with mailing lists or the frequent off-topic questions.  This is a technical list, run by medical oncologists associated with the Healing Touch Oncology private practice, and requires considerable knowledge by the patient.

Survivors Discussion Lists
These two lists are operated by patients for patients.  They discuss all patients' concerns about prostate cancer, treatments, quality of life, and other issues.

Most of the mailing lists below are unmoderated, which means subscribers' messages are posted without prior review.   One should note that the opinions expressed are not the views of the list management, and that opinions may sometimes be offered by people who are not experts, or maybe not even knowledgeable, on the subject being discussed.  So use the information with caution, and check the statements against other references.
